The sensor is mounted on a Khepera mobile robot, and competence at following a real wind plume is shown, even at low wind speeds. Further testing demonstrates the ability of the system to perform a dynamic maze solving task, and the exploitation of the hair sensors as tactile whiskers is discussed.

Geometric Chemotaxis: A Biologically-Inspired Framework for a Class of Wireless Coverage Problems

We present a new, biologically-inspired algorithm for the problem of covering a given region with wireless “units” (sensors or base-stations). The general problem, framed mathematically as the problem of covering a polygon with a minimum number of circles, is applicable both to sensor networks in which the units are sensors with known sensing range and to wireless networks in which the units ar...

Bio-inspired Obstacle Avoidance: From Animals to Intelligent Agents

A considerable amount of research in the field of modern robotics deals with mobile agents and their autonomous operation in unstructured, dynamic, and unpredictable environments. Designing robust controllers that map sensory input to action in order to avoid obstacles remains a challenging task. Several biological concepts are amenable to autonomous navigation and reactive obstacle avoidance. ...

Biologically Inspired Four Elements Compact Antenna Arrays With Enhanced Sensitivity for Direction of Arrival Estimation

A new four elements compact antenna array is presented and discussed to achieve enhanced phase resolution without sacrificing the array output power. This structure inspired by the Ormia Ochracea’s coupled ears. The analogy between this insect acute directional hearing capabilities and the electrically compact antenna array is used to enhance the array sensitivity to direction of arrival estima...

An Artificial Bee Colony Inspired Clustering Solution to Prolong Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Networks

It is very difficult and expensive to replace sensor node battery in wireless sensor network in many critical conditions such as bridge supervising, resource exploration in hostile locations, and wildlife safety, etc. The natural choice in such situations is to maximize network lifetime. One such approach is to divide the sensing area of wireless sensor network into clusters to achieve high ene...
